Why Does Glory of Christ Take the Bible So Seriously?

One of the hallmarks of Glory of Christ Baptist Church is that we both love and teach the Bible in everything we do. I once heard a prominent evangelical leader say, “I don’t have time to develop Bible-based sermons because I have to lead.” We reject the idea that leadership is divorced from the Word of God, and believe instead that true Christian leadership comes by teaching the Word of God.

I could write a small book arguing why this is so, but let me just offer a few thoughts based on 2 Timothy 3:16-17 which says this: “All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be competent, equipped for every good work.”

First, we take the Bible seriously at Glory of Christ because it is not a human book: it has literally been “breathed out by God” and therefore it is the Word of God. Other books and resources may encourage, inspire, equip, and the like, but only the Word of God was breathed out by God. Only the Word of God transforms. Only the Word of God stands forever.

Second, we take the Bible seriously at Glory of Christ because it is “profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness.” In other words, the Bible, just as it stands, is relevant and helpful and needful for everyday life. We reject modern trends to make the Bible more palatable and marketable for people, and embrace instead the truth that the Bible speaks to modern life without our help.

Third, we take the Bible seriously at Glory of Christ because by learning and obeying it every person in our church will become competent in the Lord and equipped for every good work. Wouldn’t it be a tragedy if we exchanged God’s means of equipping us for human-made alternatives? Yes, it would, and therefore we teach the Word of God in everything we do.

Philippians 2:5-7 (ESV)
Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus,?who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but made himself nothing, taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men.
