Celebrating the Visit of Christ
Luke 1:67-69
Isn’t it an amazing thing that God has visited us? In his visit, Jesus redeemed, or, according to the NASB, accomplished redemption for his people. Thus, the visit of Jesus is inextricably linked to redemption that he himself accomplishes for us.
Verse 69 refers to God, who raised up a horn of salvation for us. Throughout the Bible, a horn symbolizes power or strength. Jesus is powerful and full of strength which enables him to save his people. The message of this phrase seems so similar to Paul’s description of the Gospel in Romans 1:16 when he calls it the power of God for salvation.
The significance of Paul referring to the Gospel as the power of God instead of maybe the “wisdom” of God is that sinful man needs God’s power to attain salvation! If the OT law taught us anything, it was that man’s bondage to sin left him powerless to live righteously and merit salvation. However, God raised up a horn of salvation for us, which prefigures as an indispensable part of salvation, God’s empowering work in us through Christ.
Jesus Christ has visited us, and he accomplished redemption for us. This includes him becoming our horn of salvation. God’s salvation to us in Christ includes the power of God working in us in order to die to sin and live righteously (1 Peter 2:24)!
Praising God for the visit of Christ who is the horn of salvation for us!
