As For Me And This Church, We will Honor Mothers
The pursuit of Motherhood is not highly esteemed in our day and there are two ways I see it as detrimental. The first way is that authentic, biblical motherhood—the pursuit of raising children and homemaking—is being chopped at the root by the higher values which society places upon the modern day “professional” woman. These misplaced values lead inevitably to a greater sense of insignificance that is gained from what is of incalculable worth in God’s sight: motherhood. This is a subtle way that our culture today is hostile towards mothers.
A second way the diminishing value upon motherhood is so detrimental is because God is robbed of his glory in it. Motherhood is worth honoring because when it is done with reverence to Christ the wisdom and beauty of God’s design are displayed in it. Biblical motherhood is a fragrant aroma that blesses children, husbands, family, church, community and world. We take the glory of God very seriously at this church and because motherhood is a sweet expression of His glory, we will guard it with our lives.
Perhaps motherhood would be more significant in our day if our cultures perception of the role of home has not eroded like it has. If “home” to us is merely the location that we sleep and eat and play in, then household tasks and raising children will seem like menial labor. On the contrary, I understand home life to be the building blocks of society. If so, could you imagine the positive social effects if there were loving and nurturing mothers anchoring every home? What would this mean for drug use, for rebellion, for crime and any form of delinquency in general? FBI agents, police men, and psychologists (to name a few) would be out of work if God-centered structure were to be maintained by moms in the very fabric and infrastructure of our society, namely, our homes.
God has given us homes, and he has given us mothers to manage them and raise children in them. Whether you are a working mom or a home-schooling mom, your impact in your home and upon your children will reach your community, your world, and the kingdom of God. Her children rise up and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her (Prov 31:28). Moms, your work is eternally significant in God’s design because it reflects his wisdom and beauty when it is embraced in reverence to him.
Thus, as long as I am a pastor in this church I will labor to build a value in our culture that says, “as for me and this church, we will honor mothers.”
With Deep Appreciation for our Mothers,
Pastor Kevin
